Apple and the limits of human perception

The launch of the new iPad on March 7 may not have been earth shattering–no major design changes and no Siri. But Apple has once again lurched lean-back reading into the future. “Its new ‘Retina Display’ boasts four times as many pixels, close to the limit of human perception”, reports The Economist’s Babbage blog. That brings the total number of pixels to more than 3.1 million, which is, according to Apple, one million more than HDTV. What does this mean for consuming content on the new device? The iPad website boasts that “everything looks and feels incredibly lifelike and perfectly detailed”. And the New York Times says that it “can display text and images that appear as sharp as they would on a printed page.”
